OOTD // How to be Body Positive

I hope you are all doing well.  Thanks for being here with me again.

I really enjoyed writing about body positivity in my last post, so today I am continuing along those lines.  If you didn't see my last post, it was about the word “fat” and the reason there is less correlation between health problems and fatness than we are told.

The sad fact of the matter is that even if you are aware that your body is okay as it is, we live in a world where fat bodies are constantly policed, criticized, and shamed.  How can we combat this type of thinking?

I'll share five tips that helped me along the body positive path.

1.  Don't engage in negative body talk.

To become confident, you have to actively fight against anti-fat sentiment.  Most of us pick up on body negative talk.  We say thing like “I wish I were a size __”.  We jump on the bandwagon when others are disparaging their own looks by chiming in with whatever we are unhappy about with ourselves.

If you want to love your body, you must stop this behavior.  If someone is talking about weight loss or being negative about their body image around you, you don't have to engage in it.  Oftentimes you can steer the conversation in another direction.

2.  Steer clear of the negative marketing in the fashion and beauty industries.

I advise against reading many beauty/fashion magazines or watching much TV/advertisements.  There is a culture of body hate that is extremely prevalent in these mainstream forms of entertainment that will become ingrained into your subconscious with enough exposure.  Instead, follow body positive youtubers and entertainers (if anyone is interested in a list of recommended youtubers, please let me know).  Read blogs and online zines.  Make it your mission to seek alternative point of view.

4.  Invest in your body by taking good care of your health.

Once you've made it a point to challenge/ignore body negative friends and seek alternative viewpoints, the next step to succeeding in body confidence is to take good care of your body.  This one is something fairly new to me.  In college, I took terrible care of my body.  I think many young people have the same problem; in our culture we are taught that achievement and productivity is the ultimate goal.  However, if you don't have your health, you have nothing.

I know that not everyone is lucky enough to be healthy or pain free.  There are so many people who despite living an extremely healthy lifestyle, deal with chronic pain and health issues.  I know that loving your body when you are in dealing with this can be very difficult.  But you must try to love yourself anyway.  Body positivity is for everyone.

This year I have started really putting an effort into taking care of my body.  For me, it's going to the gym regularly and eat only plant based food.  This has made such a big difference in the way I feel.  When my body feels happy and healthy and rested, I feel grateful for my body, and I find it easier to love it despite its flaws.

5.  Look at yourself in the mirror with a non-critical eye.

The last tip I have for body confidence is one that you'll hear pretty much every body positive blogger say, and that is to look at yourself in the mirror.  Really look at your body, and try to identify the parts you like.  If you want to go a step further, take pictures of your entire body and take them from every angle.  Take them in various stages of dress and undress.  When you look at yourself, notice every bump and ripple and stretch mark.  Make a real effort to love these parts of yourself.  Take an outside perspective and know that no human is perfect.  If you've really put the effort into distancing yourself from the mainstream perception of beauty, you'll find that this is not too terribly hard.

I do hope that this blog post was helpful to someone.  I know it was helpful for me to write out to remind myself, because being body positive is a daily challenge!

Thank you for reading!  Wishing you all a body positive week!

OOTD // Let's talk about the word FAT

Let's talk about the word fat.

It's been used for centuries as an insult. “Fat” doesn't just mean extra weight, it also brings connotations such as lazy, gluttonous, even smelly.

As a member of the fat positive community, I am taking back the word fat. I want to shake off those bad connotations and use the word as what it is, a descriptor. Fat, thin, tall, short, black, white.

Fat is a descriptor. You aren't fat. You have fat.

There is nothing wrong with fat. For women, fat makes up 18% to 20% of their body weight. This is around 5% higher than men, the reason being that the female body is designed to be able to nourish a fetus and needs the extra robustness. In other words, the fat helps women to have a healthy pregnancy.

Extra weight is not necessarily a bad thing for people of all genders.  Scientists have found that people who rank as overweight according to BMI (a debunked measurement of health; read more here) tend to live longer than their thinner counterparts.

Astounding, right? After all, we've been taught all our lives that fat is bad and unhealthy. It's not. It's just a natural animal characteristic. It has nothing to do with being gluttonous or lazy. It has everything to do with genetics, gender, and even socio-economic class.

I'm here today to say that I have a fat body and I'm okay with it. I also love my body and want to honor it by taking care of it, exercising it, and dressing it well. In the upcoming blog posts I'll be talking more about how I am able to exist as a happy, healthy fat person in a world that is very body negative.

Thank you as always for reading! Wishing you all a body positive week!

OOTD: Ombre Dress

Hello my body positive darlings! I'm finally here with a new blog post to share with you all, and I'm very excited about this particular one.

If you've followed my blog for any amount of time, you probably know that I am an avid thrifter. Mostly I frequent Goodwill here in my area. A place I've always wanted to visit however is Savers, known in some places as Value Village. I've seen hauls from bloggers who shop there for years, but I've never nearby one myself! So last month when we went to Austin for a week, I knew I had to visit the Savers there. I'm happy to report that it did not disappoint.

My favorite find at Savers was this beautiful ombre dress. It's made of a crinkle fabric and it has a halter top with a beautiful floral detail on the neckline. The bottom has a pretty fringe that adds an extra feminine flair.

When you have a piece this beautiful, it's very easy to style! I went with a few key jewelry items such as the chunky bangle bracelet and natural stone choker.

Can you believe the clouds in this picture? I am so lucky to live in Oklahoma, where the sky is always interesting and beautiful.

Thank you as always for reading! Wishing you all a beautiful body positive week!

OOTD: Greek Goddess

It was a couple days before our vacation to Texas, and we had stopped by Goodwill during lunch break to see what was up. That's the secret to good thrifting. Stopping by often and being the first person to see good things and snatch them up. It's all so very exciting.

(Well, not as exciting as Pokemon Go, but pretty exciting.)

Anyway, I had a stroke of luck that day when this Elle dress was hanging out at the end of a rack of clothes yet to be put up. XL, it said. I can usually swing an XL unless it's a junior size, so I grabbed it and headed to the fitting rooms.

It's everything I ever dreamed for in an easy sundress, honestly. It's a cool jersey knit that stretches where you need it to without clinging to your skin. The white and blue colors remind me of the Meditearannean, as I am after all fifty percent Cypriot. The little dots of orange are complete the paisely-esque pattern.

All I needed was some jewelry to complete the Greek Goddess look, so I added a Forever 21 bracelet and a new septum ring from Hot Topic. I have really been into this exotic look lately. I want to wear more jewelry and be more sparkly.

Oh, and Lucifer kept barking at the neighbor's dogs while I was shooting, so he has joined the photoshoot. That crazed look in his eyes is something else. He must have seen a squirrel - or maybe a pidgy!  (wink, wink!)
